HVAC, Plumbing, Fire Protection, and Electrical Design Services for a renovation of an old bottling plant/warehouse into a new 85,000 sq. ft. police headquarters building. The new building included a large evidence storage area, prisoner holding cells, evidence lab, family crisis area, robbery investigation area, inside investigation area, mobile crime unit area with Saley port, and all required office space.
Claitman Engineering provided Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing Design Services for the new 300,000 sq. ft., LEED certified headquarters of Consol Energy. The project had many challenges with 400 private offices and massive amounts of glass on all four exposures. The building is cooled via a variable-primary flow chiller system with VAV boxes and hot water reheat. Energy efficiency was important to the owner as this building is designed to perform better than the ASHRAE 90.1 base case model for an office building.
Electrically, the building is powered via two 4000A services in a main-tie-main configuration with a 750kW standby generator and dual 250kW uninterrupted power supplies for the data center. The building is illuminated utilizing energy efficient fluorescent and LED sources meeting the requirements of ASHRAE 90.1 for both the interior and exterior. The building is controlled via an integrated building management system that includes HVAC controls, lighting controls, fire alarm, and security systems.
Claitman Engineering managed the Mechanical Design of a 110,000 sq. ft. Pittsburgh Corporate Headquarters Building for Crown Castle. The project included a large data center with critical environmental concerns, general office space, and a security center. Claitman Engineering was also involved in post design construction coordination.
Claitman Engineering provided Mechanical Design services for a 7,000 sq. ft. conference center. This project was part of an on-call professional design contract team for continuing services at the facility. This project involved retrofitting a historic space into a new use with air conditioning and steam-to-hot water conversion for a heating plant.
Claitman Engineering provided Mechanical Design Services for a 90,000 sq. ft. spec office building. Claitman Engineering was responsible for the design of the core building systems including 300 tons of rooftop air conditioning equipment, a small hot water boiler plant, and all required core building exhaust systems.

Claitman Engineering provided Design Services for the new data center located in the new Consol Headquarters. The data center included n+1 redundant air conditioning system with underfloor distribution, and a clean agent fire protection system for multiple rooms. The data center is powered by a redundant 250kW UPS system with redundant emergency feeds from the 750kW emergency generator.
Electronic data is critical to the sustainability of business, medical records, and patient information. Record management is of utmost importance for proper patient care. Claitman Engineering provided Design Services to expand the existing server room by more than 50% of its previous size. The project included Mechanical, Electrical, and Fire Protection Design Services to accommodate the expansion. The infrastructure upgrades included a n+1 redundant air conditioning system, electrical improvements, and an expansion to the existing clean agent fire protection system.
Claitman Engineering managed HVAC, Plumbing, Fire Protection, and Electrical design of a 30,000 sq. ft. soils and waters testing laboratory. The new laboratory was integrated into an existing office building. Our design included added exhaust and makeup air for all laboratories, all safety devices, and all required power supply for analyzing machinery.
Claitman Engineering provided Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing Design Services for the new seven-story Cambria Suites Hotel located adjacent to the new Consol Energy Center (Pittsburgh Arena) in downtown Pittsburgh. The building consists of seven stories of guest suites, two restaurants, and an outdoor plaza adjacent to the new arena. This project is one of three that Claitman Engineering is involved with at the new arena complex.
Claitman Engineering was the HVAC design manager for the 190,000 sq. ft. hotel that included an indoor pool, restaurant with full service kitchen, and a spa.
Claitman Engineering provided HVAC, Plumbing, and Fire Protection Design Services for a 230,000 sq. ft. high-tech solar glass manufacturing facility. The Plumbing system consists of a drainage grid under the slab for flexibility of placement of the glass bending and coating equipment. Services were delivered as follows: an underfloor domestic water system, an overhead air, di water, gas, and domestic water grid. The HVAC system consists of a heating system to protect the Fire Protection system when the factory is not operational. The office area is conditioned with gas-fired rooftop units, complete with DX cooling, and a combination of fan powered and variable air volume boxes. The lobby/entry area, with its large multi-story expanse of curved glass required supplemental, unobtrusive pedestal-type baseboard heaters to temper the air at the lower level. The factory production area produces a significant amount of heat in all four seasons. A decision was made to utilize a system of outdoor air only to ventilate the space. A large quantity of outdoor air is introduced into the space during the summer season through industrial "duct sox". This air, now hot, is then exhausted from the building to provide the necessary ventilation.

Claitman Engineering was the mechanical design manager for the 15,000 sq. ft. retrofit of an existing clean room. The project included Class 1 and Class 10 clean room HVAC design and process exhaust system layout.
Claitman Engineering provided Mechanical and Electrical Design Services for a 250 unit, six-story apartment building adjacent to the West Virginia University Campus. The project included two floors of underground parking below the apartments and an indoor landscaped courtyard.

Claitman Engineering provided Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing design to the adaptive reuse of a turn-of-the-century brewery/bottling company into high-end residential units. The building consisted of multiple buildings adjacent to each other forming one historic structure. Along with the residential units, the first floor contains two retail tenants, common space, and a two-level parking deck in the rear. The project is located in the historic strip-district section of Pittsburgh.
Claitman Engineering is providing Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing Design Services for the adaptive reuse of the existing State Office Building in the "Golden Triangle" area of downtown Pittsburgh. The building is being renovated into 16 floors of residential apartments and a parking garage area.
Claitman Engineering was responsible for the design of the HVAC system to maintain the critical environmental parameters for the new digital transmitters.
Claitman Engineering was responsible for the replacement of existing obsolete, or inoperable heating and cooling equipment, for 30 dial offices at remote locations throughout the state of Pennsylvania. Each location had a three day allowable period of downtime in which to remove existing and install new heating and cooling equipment. All building design, bidding, and construction were completed within a four month period.
Claitman Engineering provided Design Services, along with Construction Management, for the Verizon Real Estate, Network, and Power/Frame groups of this highly critical replacement of an outdated emergency engine with a new larger exterior engine in an acoustic enclosure. The location of the new emergency generator was sandwiched between the building and an adjacent residential property. Noise was a consideration. The new engine produced 52 dB at the property line, which is only ten feet away. This value was determined to be less than the ambient traffic noise on the adjacent street.
Claitman Engineering provided Design Services and Construction Management for the Verizon Real Estate, Network, and Power/Frame groups of this highly critical replacement of two outdated emergency engines with a new rooftop-mounted engine and acoustic/aesthetic enclosure acceptable to the Williamsport Historical Society. The project was completed on time with only Owner requested change orders, and more importantly to the Owner, no outages.
Claitman Engineering provided temporary and permanent cooling of the telecommunications electronic switch for Williamsport and surrounding areas. The temperature of the electronic switching system has a (+/-) 2º F. tolerance. Verizon did not experience alarm conditions during the four months of construction. The project was completed to the owner's satisfaction, on time, and with no charge orders.

Claitman Engineering designed the installation of new air conditioning for the Wheeling Diocese Cathedral. The challenge was installing heating, cooling, and emergency engine equipment within the footprint of the existing church, hiding all HVAC equipment, as well as, ductwork, piping, and reducing all equipment noise to inaudible levels.
Claitman Engineering provided Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing Design Services for the renovation and addition to the existing St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in O'Hara Township, Pennsylvania. The project included a new sanctuary addition, as well as, renovations to the existing facility. The new sanctuary is fully conditioned with a preset dimming system for all lighting.
Claitman Engineering was assigned the task of designing an Air Conditioning System for the Cathedral's 100th Anniversary. The Bishop had only two requirements: 1) The system must be “invisible” to maintain the architectural integrity and religious significance of the 100 year old structure; 2) The system must be “Silent”. Claitman Engineering achieved both. The supply air registers were built into six of the existing enclosed confessionals. To hide the return grilles, wood work was removed from the rear of the sacristy and relocated inward three feet to allow room for a shaft without the perception of being added onto the building. The 30 foot long air cooled chiller was hidden on the site by building a pit that resembled one of the Cathedral's existing area wells. The equipment was lowered into the pit and out of sight. By working closely with the Design Team and the Diocese, we were able to satisfy both the Bishop's and Architect's noise concerns. The result is a 100 year old air conditioned Cathedral that has maintained its aesthetics and integrity.
Claitman Engineering provided Design Services for restaurants in both the landside and airside terminals of theGreater Pittsburgh International Airport. The projects included HVAC design, cooking exhaust, and electrical layout for new and renovated spaces of various sizes in the airport. Claitman Engineering provided close coordination between the various agencies representing the airport authority.
Claitman Engineering provided Design Services for the 7,500 sq. ft. restaurant, full bar, and outdoor patio seating. The project consisted of HVAC design including; exhaust and makeup air for the kitchen, Plumbing layout for the kitchen, Electrical lighting, Power Distribution, and Site Lighting.
Claitman Engineering provided Design Services for a 10,000 sq. ft. strip mall housing a dry cleaner, pizza shop, and convenience store. Project consisted of HVAC, Plumbing, Fire Protection, and Electrical design. Each tenant was to be individually metered for electric and gas. Responsibilities include the design of the shell building and the tenant fitout portions of the project.
Claitman Engineering was the lead Mechanical designer for over 25 Verizon Wireless stores including, mall type stores, strip mall stores, and stand-alone buildings. Claitman Engineering assisted Verizon Wireless with establishing standards for their HVAC and Plumbing requirements. Each store utilized the existing base building systems and included the Verizon Standards to the final project design.
Claitman Engineering provided Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Telecommunications Design Services for the new addition and renovation to the existing Dr. Cleveland Steward Elementary School in the Gateway School District. The project included a new classroom wing with a media center, and renovations and improvements to the existing building. A new chiller system was installed to provide air conditioning to the entire building, as well as, an upgraded electrical service and emergency generator. A new energy efficient lighting system was installed in the classrooms to reduce the lighting load in those rooms by half. The total building lighting load was less than 1 Watt/sq. ft.
Claitman Engineering provided Electrical and Telecommunications Design Services for the new middle school for the Grove City School District. The 100,000 sq. ft. building, while not pursuing LEED certification, uses many energy efficient strategies. The building lighting is controlled throughout with automated schedule driven lighting controls and multi-level switched lighting fixtures. The classrooms and corridors incorporate daylight switching of lamps in the fixtures for reduced energy usage.
The high-tech building incorporates audio/visual equipment and smart board technology into every classroom and teaching area. The building uses an IP Video network to deliver television and video signals to any telecommunications outlet in the facility. The cafeteria, gymnasium, large group instruction area, and music classrooms incorporate state-of-the-art sound systems integral to the building.

The renovations include replacement of the entire Mechanical system with a new 650 ton multiple chiller plant, new heating plant including natatorium ventilation. Claitman Engineering provided total Mechanical renovations and significant additions to the existing high school. The HVAC system included a 650 ton multiple chiller plant and central heating plant. The project also included a complete replacement of all air side unit ventilators and air handling equipment including the natatorium, locker rooms, gymnasiums, and administration areas.

The original project scope was Gas Line Replacement and the Restoration and Upgrade of the site grew out of that project. Claitman Engineering also re-piped the Boiler Room Gas Piping to better distribute tot he various appliances and added CO and NO sensors to the CUV outdoor air intakes.
Claitman Engineering provided Design Services for substantial Mechanical renovations to the existing school, plus substantial additions including gymnasium, renovated steam heating system, and added air conditioning to administration areas.
Claitman Engineering provided Design Services for multi-level care and residence buildings of approximately 180,000 sq. ft. each. Each included living areas from independent multi-bedroom apartments to memory impairment personal care suites, as well as, commercial laundry and kitchen facilities. The HVAC system utilized a central plant design with boilers and cooling tower to work with a loop water distribution system serving heat pumps. Our firm worked in conjunction with the owner, construction manager, and the design team to provide Mechanical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection Design Services.
Claitman Engineering was the project manager for the HVAC, Plumbing, and Fire Protection design for the renovation of an existing 80,000 sq. ft. campus center. The project included numerous new air handling systems with VAV and fan powered VAV type systems. Project included a new full commercial kitchen to serve the renovated cafeteria. Claitman Engineering provided Design Services for various infrastructure replacement projects in the building that houses the School of Nursing. One project included a 1,500 ton chiller plant replacement including water cooled chillers and cooling towers for existing classroom/office building. Another project was to replace the existing built-up air handlers in place while keeping the building operational. Part of the design was to reconfigure the air handlers to supply temporary cooling/ventilation to the floors where an air handler was being replaced.
Claitman Engineering provided Mechanical and Electrical Design Services for the new Welsh Nationality Room at the University of Pittsburgh’s Cathedral of Learning. The project had many challenges in recreating a 17th century Welsh chapel and still be able to use it as a classroom. Heating systems needed to be concealed and the lighting was installed to be as minimalistic, yet functional, for classroom use.
